3 Types of Resumes Recruiters Don’t Like

Recruiting managers have to go through hundreds and sometimes even thousands of resumes for jobs they advertise. There’s a lot of competition for corporate lawyer jobs California companies advertise. If you want to land that dream job, you’ll need to ensure that your resume stands out.
Unfortunately, many applicants for corporate lawyer jobs aren’t taking the time to properly prepare their resumes for job applications. The following are three common approaches they take that make recruiters cringe.
  • Overstuffed resumes: Some lawyers think that listing as many accomplishments as possible is the right way to get noticed by recruiters. They include any and all accomplishments without considering the job description. These types of resumes are great for showing how diverse you are. However, recruiters want the best fit. They’ll look for the resume that lists accomplishments that are closest to what they are looking for in a candidate. They are likely to read through the first few accomplishments on your list then toss it aside.
  • The skeleton: These are resumes that don’t provide recruiters enough information about the candidate. They leave out key details including a demonstration of their skill sets. Recruiters are likely to toss out such resumes even if the candidate has adequate experience for the position. This is because they simply can’t get enough information about the candidate to decide.
  • The empty resume: This resume may look great at first glance but not when you go through the details. It doesn’t showcase any specific skills. The candidate doesn’t show any major accomplishments or projects they undertook while on the job. Recruiters will therefore, assume that you were simply pushing the envelope. This isn’t someone they would even consider hiring for an in-house counsel position.
If you’re reading this article and are thinking of applying for corporate lawyer jobs, be sure to tailor your resume to the job description. Showcase those accomplishments that make you the best candidate for the position you’re applying for.
